Manhattan prosecutors have handed the decision of whether to delay former President Donald Trump’s sentencing to the court in his ongoing business records trial.
In a letter sent from District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office to Judge Juan Merchan, prosecutors clearly stated, “The people defer to the court on the appropriate post-trial schedule that allows for adequate time to adjudicate defendant’s motion while also pronouncing the sentence ‘without unreasonable delay,’” as reported by News Max.
Currently, Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on September 18, but he’s making a strong push to delay the proceedings until after the November 5 presidential election. He’s arguing that the timing of the sentencing could interfere with the election, a claim he’s labeling as an “election-interference objective.”

This comes after a jury found Trump guilty on May 30, convicting him of 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records. The charges stem from Trump’s attempt to cover up a $130,000 payment made by his former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. This payment was intended to prevent a potential scandal just before the 2016 election.
In addition to addressing the scheduling of Trump’s sentencing, Bragg’s office took aim at Trump’s repeated efforts to have Judge Merchan recuse himself from the case. Trump has claimed that Merchan is biased, a claim the judge has rejected three times already.
Despite these rejections, Trump’s legal team has filed a fourth motion, this time pointing to social media posts by Merchan’s daughter. The prosecutors, however, have dismissed these latest arguments as baseless, stating in the letter, “Defendant’s ostensibly new argument about the Court’s family member’s co-worker’s tweets is bizarre and has nothing to do with the post-trial schedule.”
The conviction of Donald Trump on felony charges is no small matter, with the possibility of a prison sentence looming over him. While the law allows for up to four years behind bars, it’s worth noting that others who have committed similar crimes often escape with nothing more than a slap on the wrist—typically fines or probation.
But this isn’t just any case. Trump is a former president, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Legal experts and the public are watching every move, waiting to see how the courts handle this unprecedented situation.
Prosecutors have made it crystal clear that they’re ready to move forward with sentencing whenever the court gives the green light. They understand the monumental task ahead—this isn’t just another day in court. The logistics of sentencing a former president are staggering, and the security measures required are beyond what most cases would ever demand.
Multiple agencies are on high alert, coordinating every detail to ensure that everything runs smoothly and safely.
