An elementary school teacher has been arrested after allegedly threatening school officials over a janitor removing a plastic barrier that he had put up to protect his classroom from the spread of COVID-19.

Fox43 reported that Chad Gerrick, a teacher at Sinking Springs Elementary School in York, has been arrested and charged with one misdemeanor count of terroristic threats. According to a criminal complaint affidavit filed by Northern York County Regional Police, this came days after a cafeteria worker reported that she overheard Gerrick threatening to “shoot all them f—–s” at the district’s administrative offices.

Police said that Gerrick went on to say that if he got sick with COVID-19, he would “come to school and spread COVID to everyone I can.” The cafeteria worker reported the threats to officials, saying she heard him make them on Friday morning.

On Friday afternoon, police executed a search warrant for Gerrick’s home and car. While they found no weapons in his vehicle, officers removed two long guns and a handgun from his Manchester Township home.

Gerrick refused to speak to officers without an attorney present, and he was taken to Central Booking for processing and to await arraignment on the charge. The school also suspended him pending an investigation of the allegations against him.

This comes after the Central York School District said that Gerrick’s school will operate remote-only through Friday because of new coronavirus cases.

“Over the holiday weekend, the District continued to receive notification of several new positive cases of COVID-19,” the school district said in a message posted on its website. “In the past 14 days, a total of 19 cases of COVID-19 have been reported at Sinking Springs Elementary.”

Social media users have condemned Gerrick’s actions.

“And given the recent study that concluded these plastic barriers do no good and may actually make it worse in the school setting, this teacher seems completely unqualified to be teaching our children anything,” one user commented on the Fox News website.

“I can understand someone being concerned or fearful; however, I expect an adult, much less an elementary school teacher, to handle it in an appropriate and mature manner. I’m thinking I wouldn’t want him to be my child’s teacher at all,” another user added, with a third writing, “Perhaps at his trial, he can explain how the virus escaped a level 4 virology lab, but a plastic barrier will stop it.”

And the COVID-19 hysteria continues.
